not typical German grandeur
MORE FIRE
Petra Kujanpää is not your typical winemaker crafting ordinary household Rieslings. Her unique approach, guided by an infallible instinct, sets her apart. As a Finnish debutant winemaker, Petra is the mastermind behind intriguing Rieslings that defy convention. Her desire to do things differently, to add more fuel to the fire, is palpable. Petra infuses her Rieslings with an un-German grandeur, a super-refined feminine complexity that makes her creations endlessly fascinating. Her passion for creating unconventional Rieslings is not just a profession but a journey of discovery that wine enthusiasts and potential customers can't help but be intrigued by.
IN MUD AND SUNSHINE
She has every visual detail under the microscope, puts every grape on the scale, and provides every emotion with a counter-emotion. Her wines grab you by the nose from the second one and do not let you go. It is a successful orchestration, a meticulous and harmonious arrangement of every aspect of winemaking, without forgetting that it is Riesling. A liberation that can effortlessly be attributed to Petra. Her perseverance and drive are the perfect example that making her incomparable Rieslings is no fluke when she scores high as an Oscar winner. The most important thing for Petra is to convey the quality of the vineyards and vines in her wines, to push boundaries and break with tradition. She has always been looking for something that she could change. Whether it is creatively influencing people or creating something environmentally friendly. Nothing is more satisfying than working on your vineyard from start to finish.
To know the good and the bad in every vineyard and every vine. To feel and see the behaviour of every vine, every cut, and every external and internal influence. I want to be able to work with nature and know the chemistry behind it. Finally, I want to bring the grapes to the cellar, knowing where they come from. The result is a Riesling that represents everything she has experienced all year. That is the work she loves. Day and night. In mud and sunshine.
LAZY WINEMAKERS
Despite some saying that natural wine, a term used to describe wine made without synthetic chemicals or pesticides, is the work of lazy winemakers, Petra Kujanpää thinks precisely the opposite. She believes that chemicals can still manipulate wines with traditional additions in the cellar in almost any direction. Nothing is added to natural wines, so the process must be done carefully from the vineyard.
MASTER DIPLOMA
When Petra spontaneously got to participate in her first grape harvest in Cyprus during the 2nd year of her chemistry studies, she was on fire. This was the beginning of her long-term passion. After her Master's Degree, she started travelling through different wine regions worldwide and knew she would one day make wine. In 2017, she worked for a year at Clemens Busch in Pünderich on the Mosel, where her love for Riesling began. The versatility of the grape variety, the fascinating landscape with its steep terraces, and the hard manual work required to make the best possible wine, including pruning, harvesting, and tending to the vines, never let her go. When she returns in 2019 for the grape harvest at Weingut Heymann-Löwenstein, fortune smiles.
EXPERIMENTAL BATCH
Petra embarks on her project on the Middle Moselle in Pommern. On over 2 hectares of ideal vineyard with predominantly old vines and steep terraces, she crafts Rieslings in an avant-garde style that is truly her own. Her first experimental batch, the highly delicious 2018 Heretic Riesling Pet Nat, was a testament to her innovative spirit. The demand for this unique creation was so high that all the bottles were sold within a week, leaving wine enthusiasts eager for more of Petra's future creations.
Two years later, her wine is textured, ripe, highly balanced, and interwoven with super-refined fruit. They are exceptionally characterful wines with a feminine touch.
These are the Rieslings that we like to drink.
